Episodes from the Story of Griselda: Gualtieri setting off on Horseback and the Meeting of Gualtieri and Griselda

Pesellino
1450

These were part of the decoration of a wedding chest, and depict the initial part of the story of Griselda, one of the most famous stories in the Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. In the lower panel is a representation of Gualtieri, Marquis of Saluzzo, who is receiving a delegation of citizens and promising to take a wife. In the largest panel, Gualtieri is mounting his horse to go hunting. He meets Griselda and marries her in the presence of her parents. The story was to continue on a second chest with the terrible trials to which Gualtieri subjected Griselda to test her loyalty, and the couple’s reconciliation.
