Portrait of Young Girl with Fan

Giacomo Ceruti
1740

The girl with large, melancholy eyes and fleshy lips portrayed by Ceruti is one of the artist’s best-known images and one of the most touching interpretations of adolescence. She is wearing a turquoise dress and holding a large violet fan in her hand, observing us with disarming simplicity. With his portraits and other paintings featuring beggars and the poor, depicted almost life size, Ceruti earned a prominent position among the painters of reality in Lombardy.
