Madonna and Child in a Landscape

Tiziano Vecellio
1507

One of Titian’s first paintings, it shows how the young artist was developing the work of Bellini and Giorgione on the expressive power of colour. The Madonna and Child group is set in a vast natural landscape and is endowed with a new and surprising monumentality, while the hot, molten pictorial matter defines the forms not through drawing but by way of broad fields of colour.
